The Common Conditions Service, explained

You no longer always need a GP appointment for certain everyday conditions. Here is how the new service works.

One of the biggest changes in Irish pharmacy in years arrived in early 2026: pharmacists can now assess and, where appropriate, treat a defined list of common conditions. It is called the Common Conditions Service, and it is designed to help you get timely care for everyday problems without waiting for a GP appointment.

Which conditions are covered?

The service covers eight conditions, each with its own age criteria:

  • Hay fever (allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis)
  • Acute infective conjunctivitis (eye infection)
  • Cold sores
  • Impetigo
  • Oral thrush
  • Shingles
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Vulvovaginal thrush

How does it work?

You get in touch, our pharmacist asks a few short questions to check the service is suitable for you, and then you have a private consultation. Where appropriate, the pharmacist can supply or prescribe treatment there and then. If your symptoms are not suitable for the service, or need a doctor, the pharmacist will refer you to your GP or hospital.

Is there a fee?

Yes. This is a private consultation service, so a consultation fee applies. Our pharmacist will explain the fee before your consultation begins. Any medicine prescribed may be covered under the Medical Card, Drugs Payment Scheme or Long Term Illness Scheme.

Why it is good news

It means faster, more convenient access to care for everyday conditions, right here on Lower Main Street, with your safety always coming first. Not every condition or person will be suitable, but for many it is a simpler way to get help.
