Common Conditions Service - your questions

What is the Common Conditions Service?

It is a service that lets our trained pharmacist assess and, where appropriate, treat a defined list of everyday minor health conditions - without the need for a GP appointment. It follows clinical protocols set by the HSE and the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland.

Which conditions can the pharmacist treat at Lynch's Pharmacy?

Eight common conditions: hay fever (allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis), acute infective conjunctivitis, cold sores, impetigo, oral thrush, shingles, uncomplicated urinary tract infection, and vulvovaginal thrush. Each has its own age criteria, and not every person will be suitable.

Do I need an appointment or a GP referral?

No GP referral is needed. Call in or phone us on 066 7142479 to arrange a consultation. Our pharmacist will check the service is right for you before going ahead.

Is there a fee?

Yes - this is a private consultation service and a consultation fee applies. Our pharmacist will explain the fee to you before your consultation begins, so there are no surprises. Any medicine that is prescribed may be covered under the Medical Card, the Drugs Payment Scheme, or the Long Term Illness Scheme.

Will I definitely be given a prescription?

Not necessarily. After the assessment the pharmacist will recommend the most appropriate option for you - that may be self-care advice, a pharmacy medicine, a prescribed medicine, or a referral to your GP. Your safety always comes first.

Is the service suitable for children?

Some conditions can be treated from a very young age and others have a minimum age - for example, shingles is for adults aged 18 and over. Contact us and our pharmacist will confirm whether the service is suitable.
